For a personal trainer or online coach running their own business, the decision is not which app looks slickest in the App Store, it is which tool keeps clients, programs, check-ins, and payments straight for one person who has no front-desk staff, and at what real price once the per-client fees, transaction fees, and add-ons are included. Trainer software reviews mostly compare screenshots. The products separate on pricing models, per-client math, and what the export looks like when you leave.
ABC Trainerize, TrueCoach, Everfit, and PT Distinction are the shortlist a solo coach or small studio actually meets. Each is a real product with a real identity, and the marketing pages make all of them look equivalent. They are not.
Marketplaces and creator platforms such as Ladder, FitBudd, or a plain Kajabi course site solve different problems: several take a cut or own the client relationship, and course builders were never designed to run weekly programming and check-ins for fifty people. White-label app builders are developer projects, not tools you run this afternoon.
The short version
- The pricing model is the product. Trainerize sells per-coach plans that scale by client count, TrueCoach sells active-client bands, Everfit sells per-client tiers on top of a free entry plan, and PT Distinction sells client-allowance tiers with every feature included. The sticker price tells you almost nothing.
- PT Distinction is the all-inclusive option: Basic at $19.90 per month (3 clients), Pro at $59.90 (25), Master at $89.90 (50), with extra clients free for the first month then $6.00, $2.40, or $1.60 per client depending on tier. Custom-branded apps arrive from Pro up (Basic ships the same apps unbranded), and the AI meal planner and nearly every other feature come included rather than as add-ons.
- Trainerize is the established all-rounder: free for 1 client, Grow at $10 for up to 2, Pro from $25 for 5 clients scaling to $135 at 50, and Studio Plus at $275 per location for up to 500 ($248 per month on annual billing, which is what the pricing page shows by default). The catch is the add-on layer: the custom-branded app is a one-time fee of $169 on Pro, and Stripe payments, video coaching, and nutrition are paid extras.
- TrueCoach is the training-delivery specialist: Starter $29.98 per month ($26.34 annual) for 5 active clients, Standard $69.98 ($57.99) for 20, Pro $164.98 ($136.99) for 50, with the custom-branded app included from Standard up.
- Everfit is the free-start option: a real free tier for up to 5 clients, Pro from $19 per month ($16 annual) for 5 scaling to about $95 at 50, Studio from $105 ($88) for 50, with nutrition and automation available as paid add-ons.
- Hevy Coach is the simple-delivery wildcard: $25 per month for up to 10 clients, $90 for 26 to 50 clients, with clients getting Hevy Pro free, but nutrition and payments are not its focus.
- Do not decide on the sticker. Decide on the tier that covers your real client count, the add-ons your offer actually needs, the transaction fees, and what the export looks like when you leave.
- Every tool here can program a workout and message a client. The differences that matter are the per-client math, what is an add-on versus included, the API surface, and the exit.
- PT Distinction
Basic $19.90/mo (3 clients); Pro $59.90 (25); Master $89.90 (50); extra clients free for 1 month then $6.00/$2.40/$1.60 per client by tier; custom-branded apps from Pro up (Basic ships unbranded iOS/Android apps); AI meal planner included; trainers added free - ABC Trainerize
Free for 1 client; Grow $10/mo ($9 annual) up to 2; Pro 5 $25 ($23), Pro 15 $50 ($45), Pro 30 $79 ($71), Pro 50 $135 ($122), Pro 75 $180 ($162), Pro 100 $225 ($203), Pro 200 $250 ($225); Studio Plus $275/mo ($248 annual) per location up to 500; add-ons on Grow/Pro: Advanced Nutrition including the Smart Meal Planner $20/mo (Grow, Pro 5-15) or $45/mo (Pro 30-200), Business $25/mo, Stripe payments $10/mo, video coaching $10/mo, custom-branded app $169 one-time - TrueCoach
Starter $29.98/mo ($26.34 annual) up to 5 active clients; Standard $69.98 ($57.99) up to 20; Pro $164.98 ($136.99) up to 50; Custom tier by quote above 50; branded app from Standard; Zapier listed on the Standard card but marked Pro-exclusive in the feature table; payments built into every plan but US/UK/Canada/Australia only, with a flat 5% per-transaction fee per the help center; coaches added free; 14-day trial and 90-day guarantee for first-time annual subscribers - Everfit
Free tier up to 5 clients; Pro $19/mo monthly ($16 annual) for 5 clients, $75 at 35, $95 at 50, $255 at 250; Studio $105/mo ($88 annual) for 50 up to $430 at 500, adding group chat, broadcast messages, and on-demand collections (custom branding and team management already in Pro); Meal Plans $39/mo ($33 annual); AutoFlow from $29/mo ($24 annual), usage-based: first 30 clients $29, then +$27 per 30 clients up to 120; On-Demand Collections $25/mo ($21 annual) or included in Studio; Payments and Packages from $9/mo ($8 annual) - Hevy Coach
$25/mo for 1-10 clients; $50 for 11-25, $90 for 26-50, $160 for 51-100, $250 for 101-200; Hevy Pro included for clients
USD list prices checked against each vendor's official pricing page on 2026-10-08. Trainerize's page opens on its annual toggle (Grow $9, Pro 5 $23, Studio Plus $248); monthly billing runs $10/$25/$275 with 10% off on annual, confirmed from the page's own plan configuration and FAQ, so third-party trackers quoting Studio Plus at $248 flat or Pro 50 at $113 are citing the annual rate or an outdated sheet. Everfit AutoFlow is usage-based and Trainerize add-ons bill on top of the base plan. Prices change often; re-check the live pages before budgeting.
What a coaching business actually requires
Before comparing vendors, write the requirement list, because the tool for one trainer with ten in-person clients is a different product from the tool for an online coach running fifty remote clients on monthly subscriptions.
- Program delivery. Program building, exercise libraries with video, progressions, and a client app that works on a phone in the gym. This is the daily surface and the reason most coaches pick a tool at all.
- Client management. Profiles, metrics, progress photos, assessments, check-in forms and habit tracking. The tool should make the next session obvious without hunting through chat threads.
- Billing and subscriptions. Monthly recurring payments, packages, online checkout, failed-card handling. This is where the fine print lives: transaction fees on top of the plan, and whether payments cost extra as an add-on.
- Client-facing experience and brand. A proper branded app, not a token logo. On several platforms the branded app is a paid extra or a higher-tier feature, and it is the single most visible part of your offer.
- Multi-coach support when you grow. Team members, separate rosters, and revenue sharing. Most tools charge per coach or by client count, and the math changes the moment the second coach appears; PT Distinction and TrueCoach are the exceptions, letting you add trainers without a per-seat fee.
- Communication. Messaging, group chats, forms, and accountability automation. Some tools include the automation engine, others charge monthly for the workflow layer.
- Nutrition. Habit tracking at minimum, meal plans at best. On several platforms nutrition is a significant add-on; treat it as part of your bill if your offer includes it.
- Reporting and export. Revenue summaries and a clean export of client data, programs, and history when you switch. Data you cannot leave with is a liability.
Keep that list next to you while reading. Every tool here can deliver a workout. The list is what separates them.
The shortlist
ABC Trainerize
Trainerize (now ABC Trainerize) is the most established name in the category and the closest thing to a default in North American personal training. Pricing is per coach and scales with client count: a free plan for 1 client, Grow at $10 per month for up to 2 clients, and the Pro plan from $25 per month for 5 clients through $79 at 30 and $135 per month at 50 clients (about $122 annually; annual billing takes 10 percent off every paid plan). Studio Plus, at $275 per month per location ($248 on annual billing) for up to 500 clients, is the gym and studio tier, with most add-ons included there.
The honest catch is the add-on layer under Pro. The custom-branded app is a one-time fee of $169 on Pro rather than installed, Stripe payments are a $10 per month add-on, video coaching is $10, the Business add-on runs $25, and the Advanced Nutrition layer, which includes the Smart Meal Planner rather than selling it separately, runs $20 per month on Grow and Pro 5 to 15 and $45 per month on Pro 30 and above. Trainerize includes the largest ecosystem: Zapier, wearables integrations, habit coaching, a client app, and a large exercise library are all there, which is why it keeps winning generalist comparisons.
- The strength: the widest feature surface and integration ecosystem in the category, a real free tier, and a Studio Plus tier where the branding, payments, and nutrition pieces stop being add-ons.
- The catch: the per-coach Pro plan bills by client count, and the extras a serious online coach needs (payments, video, nutrition, and optionally the Business add-on) stack $65 to $90 per month on top of the mid-tier plan (the same stack is $40 below 30 clients, where nutrition drops to $20), plus a $169 one-time branded-app fee.
- Best for: a coach or small studio that wants the ecosystem and integrations, or a hybrid gym that will land on Studio Plus anyway.
TrueCoach
TrueCoach is the training-first option, built for coaches whose product is the workout: fast program building, a 3,000-plus exercise video library, clean client dashboards, and a client app that stays out of the way. Pricing runs by active-client band per account: Starter at $29.98 per month ($26.34 billed annually) for up to 5 active clients, Standard at $69.98 ($57.99) for up to 20, and Pro at $164.98 ($136.99) for up to 50, with a Custom tier by quote beyond 50.
Wearables integration with Apple, Garmin, and WHOOP, habit and nutrition tracking through MyFitnessPal, and the custom-branded fitness app are included from Standard up. Zapier is murkier: the Standard plan card lists Zapier automations, but TrueCoach's own feature table marks them as exclusive to Pro, so budget for Pro if automations are the draw. Payments are included, though the pricing-page FAQ's "nope, what you see is what you get" deserves an asterisk: TrueCoach's own help center documents a flat 5 percent processing fee per transaction on TrueCoach Payments, calculated on the full invoice including tax, against roughly 2.9 percent plus 30 cents for a direct Stripe account, so model that against your billing volume during the trial. Built-in payments also only work for coaches with bank accounts in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia; everywhere else, TrueCoach is a programming tool and you invoice separately. There is a 14-day free trial and a 90-day money-back guarantee (the TrueCoach Guarantee) for first-time subscribers on annual plans.
- The strength: the fastest workout-builder-to-client-app loop in the group, and the branded app included in the plan price rather than bolted on.
- The catch: it is deliberately narrower than the all-in-one tools, nutrition and business features are shallower, and at 50 clients it is the most expensive plan in this comparison on monthly billing.
- Best for: online coaches and performance coaches whose deliverable is training programs, and who keep billing simple.
Everfit
Everfit is the free-start option and the one built explicitly for online coaching at scale: a genuinely usable free tier for up to 5 clients, then the Pro plan from $19 per month ($16 annual) for 5 clients, scaling in client bands to about $95 monthly at 50 clients and about $255 at 250. The Studio tier starts at $105 per month ($88 annual) for 50 clients and adds group chat, broadcast messages, and on-demand collections, scaling toward $430 monthly at 500. Custom branding and team management are already included on Pro, so Studio is about community and on-demand content, not branding.
Automation is the identity: client-onboarding flows, scheduled check-ins, and task automation. The honest catches are the paid add-ons: meal plans cost about $39 per month ($33 annual), the AutoFlow automation layer and on-demand collections are separately priced on Pro, and a solo coach with 50 clients who wants workouts, meal plans, and automation pays at least $136 per month total even on annual billing ($79 Pro + $33 Meal Plans + $24 AutoFlow base). AutoFlow is also usage-based, $29 per month for the first 30 clients plus about $27 per additional 30, so a roster of 50 fully on automation really lands around $155 to $165, and that is still before the Payments and Packages add-on, which starts at $9 per month ($8 annual). Some AI features are add-on territory, though not all: Pro already includes the AI-powered Smart Response assistant, while AI meal-plan generation rides with the Meal Plans add-on.
- The strength: the best free demonstration of the category (5 clients, no card required), strong automation, and per-client pricing that gets cheaper as your roster grows.
- The catch: the add-on stack means the real bill is the sum of Pro plus Meal Plans plus AutoFlow plus payments, and the comparison pages that make it look like a $19 product rarely model that.
- Best for: online coaches building automated monthly offers, who will model the full add-on stack before committing.
PT Distinction
PT Distinction is the all-inclusive option: instead of stacking add-ons, it bundles branded apps, its AI meal planner, nutrition coaching, forms, habit tracking, automation, and payments into tiers defined by client allowance. Basic runs $19.90 per month for 3 clients, Pro $59.90 for 25, and Master $89.90 for 50. Extra clients are free for the first month and then $6.00, $2.40, or $1.60 per client per month depending on tier, so a 60-client business on Master is roughly $106 per month.
That single-number pricing is the product: with every feature on by default, PT Distinction is typically the cheapest way to run a 25 to 50 client coaching business with branded apps and nutrition included, where Trainerize or Everfit at the same scope costs meaningfully more once add-ons stack. The catches are interface depth and polish: the UI is dense, onboarding is a real project, and the 3-client Basic tier is more of a parked car than a home. Reviewers rate it consistently high, but expect a learning curve before the automation engine pays for itself.
- The strength: every capability included per tier, transparent per-client rates beyond the allowance, unlimited extra trainers at no charge, and the lowest all-in monthly cost for a 25 to 50 client roster.
- The catch: the experience demands more setup and training than the newer players, and the interface feels its age in places.
- Best for: an established online coach with a growing roster who wants one bill with no add-on scaffolding.

What to check before you sign
- The pricing-model math. Convert everything to your own month with your real client count: at 30 clients, Trainerize Pro 30 is $79 before any add-ons ($71 on annual billing), TrueCoach Standard is $69.98, Everfit Pro is about $65 to $75 before meal plans and automation, and PT Distinction Pro at $59.90 plus five extra clients lands at $71.90 with everything included. Four different tools, four very different all-in numbers.
- What is an add-on versus included. Trainerize prices payments, video, and nutrition separately on Pro, Everfit prices meal plans and automation separately, PT Distinction includes both, and TrueCoach includes its branded app at Standard. Make the add-on list part of the evaluation, not a footnote.
- Transaction fees under the payment layer. Several platforms apply their own processing on top of Stripe, and per-transaction fees show up on plans that advertise free payments — TrueCoach is the live example, with a documented flat 5 percent fee on its free automated payments. Compute the fee on your average client subscription, not the checkout page example.
- The export test. Export every client, program, and payment history during the trial and open it somewhere else. If the export is missing fields, gated by tier, or buried behind support, the vendor owns your records. Data you cannot leave with is a liability.
- Client app reality. Install the client app and run a real week of programming through it. The client-facing app is the product your clients judge you on, and the gap between the best and worst client experience in this category is larger than any backend difference.
- Creator platforms are not coaching software. Course builders and general marketplace apps take a cut or were never designed for weekly programming, check-ins, and habit tracking. Treat them as a channel for content or leads, and keep your own tool for the roster you actually coach.
The honest recommendation
- Solo trainer, first online clients, one predictable tool: start on Everfit's free tier (5 clients) and upgrade to Pro when the roster outgrows it, or on Trainerize's Grow plan at $10 if you want the ecosystem from day one.
- Established coach, 25 to 50 clients, wants nutrition, branded apps, and automation without an add-on spreadsheet: PT Distinction, with the honest warning that setup takes a real weekend and the interface is dated.
- Program-delivery-first online coach selling training, not a lifestyle bundle: TrueCoach, whose builder-to-app loop is the fastest, with the branded app included from Standard.
- Hybrid gym or studio with in-person members plus remote clients: Trainerize Studio Plus, where the add-on layer that punishes solo coaches stops being a factor.
- Training-only minimalists with a modest roster: Hevy Coach at $25 per month for up to 10 clients, as long as you accept that nutrition and payments live elsewhere.
- The platform is the floor, not the ceiling. Coaching software earns its keep when the client app delivers the program, the payment matches the subscription, the export is clean, and the price you pay is the price of the tier and add-ons you actually need, fees included.
